The Central African Republic is a landlocked country in Central Africa, bordering Chad, Sudan, South Sudan, the DR Congo, the Republic of the Congo and Cameroon. Its capital and largest city, Bangui, sits on the Ubangi River at the southern border with the DR Congo, and is the country's main transport hub. In the southwest, Dzanga-Sangha National Park protects rainforest with forest elephants and western lowland gorillas. The Yade Massif, a granite plateau, lies in the northwest.
Recent decades have brought repeated coups and civil wars, and armed groups still control large parts of the country. Freedom of movement is limited in the north, road travel is hazardous, and government control outside the capital is limited. The dry season runs from November to April, and the rainy season from May to October can make many roads impassable. Read current security advice before you set a route or dates.
