Newfoundland and Labrador is Canada's easternmost province. Most of its people live on the island of Newfoundland, and Labrador is the mainland part, across the Strait of Belle Isle to the northwest. Visitors reach the island by ferry from Nova Scotia or by air, and the trip suits hikers, coastal drivers and people who like small harbour towns more than city breaks.
Gros Morne National Park on the west coast is a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its mountains, the fjord-like Western Brook Pond and coastal hiking trails. At the northern tip, L'Anse aux Meadows holds the remains of a Norse settlement from about 1000 CE, also a UNESCO site. Icebergs drift past the northern and eastern coasts in spring and early summer. Distances between sights are long, so choose two or three bases instead of moving every night. Late spring through early fall is the main season, and plan at least a week to see the west coast and the northern peninsula.

How do you get to Newfoundland from the mainland?
Fly, or take Marine Atlantic from North Sydney to Port aux Basques, which runs daily all year and takes about 7 hours. Reservations are strongly recommended.
How many days do you need in Newfoundland?
Seven to ten days for St. John's, Gros Morne and L'Anse aux Meadows by car. A week works for one region, because driving distances are long.
When is the best time to see icebergs in Newfoundland?
In spring and early summer, according to the provincial tourism site. Timing varies by year and coast, so keep dates flexible and ask local tour operators.
How much does Gros Morne cost?
Parks Canada lists $12.25 per adult per day, $10.00 from November 1 to May 15, with youth 17 and under free. Annual and Discovery Passes may be cheaper for longer stays.
Is Labrador part of the same trip?
Labrador is a separate region that needs more time and planning. Treat it as an add-on for a second trip, rather than squeezing it into an island loop.
