Cape Breton Island

Cape Breton Island

Cape Breton Island is a rugged island off Nova Scotia's Atlantic coast, known for its highlands, coastline and Gaelic-influenced culture. Most people go for the Cabot Trail and the Fortress of Louisbourg.

Cape Breton Island sits east-northeast of Nova Scotia's mainland and is separated from it by the Strait of Canso. The Canso Causeway, about 1,385 m long, is the road link to the mainland and has been in use since 1955. The island covers about 10,311 km², and Bras d'Or Lake, a large saltwater lake, fills much of its centre. Its name means "Golden Arm" in French. The Cabot Trail, a scenic road loop around and over the highlands, is the main draw, alongside Cape Breton Highlands National Park.

Set aside a full day for the Cabot Trail, more if you hike in the national park. The Fortress of Louisbourg, an 18th-century French fortified port partly rebuilt by Parks Canada in the 1960s, is one of the island's main historic sites. Fiddle music came with Scottish immigrants, and ceilidhs, informal music gatherings, are a popular way to hear it. The eastern shore stays cool, foggy and windy, so pack layers.

Cape Breton Island FAQ

How many days do you need for the Cabot Trail?

Two days covers the loop with a night on the coast. Three or four lets you add short hikes and Fortress of Louisbourg. A one-day drive leaves no time to stop.

Do you need a park pass for the Cabot Trail?

Yes, once you stop in the Highlands park. Parks Canada lists adult daily admission at $10.00 and $19.50 per family or group, and youth 17 and under are free.

Is the Cabot Trail better clockwise or counterclockwise?

Parks Canada says the scenery differs with direction, and either way is scenic. Pick by where you sleep and when the light is best for the coast, then keep to one direction.

When is the best time to visit Cape Breton Island?

July to October. Summer is warm and busy, while September and October bring fall color and fewer crowds. Winters are snowy and some seasonal sights close.

Can you fly into Cape Breton Island?

Yes, into Sydney (YQY), though many visitors fly into Halifax and drive. If you drive, cross the Canso Causeway, which Parks Canada names as the start of Route 19.
