Ruse sits on the south bank of the Danube, across the river from Giurgiu in Romania. Its nickname, Little Vienna, refers to the 19th-century buildings in the centre, which date from the years when the city was a busy port on the river. The city also has Roman remains from a fortress on the Danube, and its transport museum is housed in the building of Bulgaria's first railway station.
Ruse suits a stop of one or two days, with architecture, museums and a walk along the river. The Rusenski Lom nature park lies just outside the city, and its canyon has marked trails that make a good half-day outing. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons for walking the streets and the canyon, because summer is hot. One night leaves time for the centre and a short trip to the canyon, and the city fits well on a route between the Bulgarian interior and Romania.

Is Ruse worth visiting?
Yes as a one-night stop with architecture, the transport museum and the Danube. It is not a beach or mountain town, and most visitors add Rusenski Lom or use Ruse as a break between Romania and the Black Sea.
Why is Ruse called Little Vienna?
The tourism portal says the beauty and interior planning of buildings by Italian, Austrian, German and Bulgarian architects gave the city that nickname. The Tax Administration building of 1901 to 1902 is a symbol.
Can you cross into Romania from Ruse?
Yes, over the Danube Bridge to Giurgiu. Both countries are in the Schengen area, so this is an internal crossing; the passport note above says what to carry and what to expect at the bridge.
How far is Ruse from Sofia and Varna?
The national tourism portal gives 320 km from Sofia, 200 km from Varna and about 300 km from Plovdiv. Plan a full travel day from Sofia rather than a day trip.
What can you see near Ruse?
Rusenski Lom nature park, 20 km south-west, has the medieval town of Cherven, the Ivanovo rock-hewn churches (UNESCO) and St Dimitar Basarbovski, the only active rock monastery in Bulgaria.
