Red Beach

Visit Red Beach in Rio’s Urca neighborhood for reddish sand, a quieter shore and views of Sugarloaf Mountain, with the Cláudio Coutinho Track nearby.

Praia Vermelha, or Red Beach, is a small sandy cove in Rio’s Urca neighborhood, at the foot of Sugarloaf Mountain. Its reddish sand, views of the mountain and quieter feel set it apart from larger city beaches. You can relax by the water, then walk the nearby Cláudio Coutinho Track for a nature outing alongside the shore. Food and drink vendors are close by, and Bar Urca is about a 15-minute walk away for bay views after your visit.

The Cláudio Coutinho Track

The Cláudio Coutinho Track begins beside the beach and gives you a way to add a nature walk to a visit to Praia Vermelha. The route runs along the shore, with the hillside nearby. Bring water if you plan to walk, since there may be few facilities along the way.

A stop in Urca after the beach

Bar Urca is about a 15-minute walk from Praia Vermelha. You can order a beer and snacks, then take them across the street to sit on the wall overlooking the bay. The spot also works for catching the sunset if you miss it from Sugarloaf Mountain.
