Paço Imperial

Visit Paço Imperial in Rio de Janeiro, a former royal palace with free art exhibitions, historic rooms and a second-floor view.

Paço Imperial is a former royal and imperial palace at Praça Quinze de Novembro in central Rio de Janeiro, now used as a cultural centre and exhibition space. Built in 1743, it has housed changing art exhibitions and galleries inside its historic rooms, with a second-floor view noted as a highlight. Admission is free, and restaurants operate inside the building. Exhibition content can change, so check what is on before you go; some displays have limited English text.

From governors’ residence to imperial palace

Paço Imperial was built in 1743 as a residence for the governors of Rio de Janeiro. It became the Palace of the Viceroys, the Portuguese royal family’s residence after its arrival in 1808, and later the seat of the kingdom and the Brazilian Empire. Dom Pedro I and Dom Pedro II also lived here.

The building’s political role changed again after the monarchy ended. It was used as Rio’s central post office during the Republican period. In 1938, it was designated a National Historic and Artistic Heritage site. A restoration in the 1980s returned the building closer to its earlier form and helped establish its current role as a cultural centre.

Inside the building today

The former palace now hosts temporary exhibitions of painting, photography and other arts, alongside cultural programming. A permanent exhibition tells the story of the building itself. The galleries give the visit a contemporary focus within a place that once served as a centre of government.

Exhibitions change, and some have limited English-language descriptions. Ask staff about the current displays if you want more context. The building has several exhibition spaces, and the second floor is noted for its view.

A visit at Praça Quinze de Novembro

Paço Imperial stands at Praça Quinze de Novembro in central Rio. Its historic rooms and galleries can be visited without an admission charge, and restaurants are located inside the complex. The site is accessible, with a wheelchair-accessible entrance and restroom.

The building’s exhibitions may not always be open; maintenance has at times limited access to the patio and a restaurant. Check the current exhibition programme before setting out if seeing a particular display is the main reason for your visit. Photography is permitted, but video recording is not.
