Quinta da Boa Vista
Park

Quinta da Boa Vista

Visit Quinta da Boa Vista in Rio de Janeiro for lakeside walks, gardens and a picnic on the former grounds of Brazil’s imperial residence.

Quinta da Boa Vista is a large public park in São Cristóvão, in Rio de Janeiro’s North Zone, on the former grounds of the imperial residence. Its gardens, lakes and broad paths make room for a walk, a bike ride or a picnic, with space for children to play. The former palace is tied to the history of Brazil’s royal and imperial families and housed the National Museum, which was badly damaged by fire in 2018. Check the current status of the museum and zoo before planning a visit to either.

A royal estate turned public park

Quinta da Boa Vista occupies the São Cristóvão area of Rio’s North Zone. The grounds once belonged to the Portuguese royal family, who moved to Brazil in 1808, and later served as a residence for Brazil’s imperial family. The estate remained associated with the monarchy until the Republic was proclaimed in 1889.

The palace at the centre of the estate is known as the Palace of São Cristóvão. Its neoclassical building was badly damaged in a major fire in 2018. The grounds are now a public park, with gardens, lakes, open lawns and paths. The landscaped gardens are associated with French landscape designer Auguste Glaziou.

Walks, lakes and outdoor activities

The park’s paths suit a slow walk, a jog or a bike ride. Lakes and green spaces give you room to pause, and the grounds are used for picnics and family outings. Cycling is one way to cover more of the extensive park; bike rental has been reported, but check locally whether it is available on the day of your visit.

There are also facilities for recreation, including playground equipment and sports courts. Families can make the park the main stop of an outdoor day, while visitors interested in the estate’s past can pair a walk with a look at the palace grounds and preserved gardens.

The National Museum and zoo

The former palace housed Brazil’s National Museum, known for collections spanning archaeology, anthropology, botany and zoology. Reports about the museum describe serious damage from the 2018 fire, so check its current visitor information before setting out to see exhibitions.

Rio’s zoological garden is also within the park. Its operating status has been reported as affected by construction, so confirm that it is open before making it the focus of your visit. Kiosks have been noted in the park, but bringing food gives you a picnic option if you do not find a convenient place to eat.
