Praia do Leblon
Beach

Praia do Leblon

Visit Praia do Leblon in Rio de Janeiro for beach sports, a relaxed stretch of sand and sunset views of Morro Dois Irmãos. Get practical tips.

Praia do Leblon continues the Ipanema shoreline, from Jardim de Alah to the cliffs by Niemeyer Avenue in Rio de Janeiro. The beach draws families and locals for its broad stretch of sand, beach sports and a calmer pace than nearby Copacabana or Ipanema. Look toward Morro Dois Irmãos as the sun sets, or settle in at a beachfront bar for a drink and some people-watching. The sea can be rough, so take care before swimming; after heavy rain, avoid the canal mouth.

Where Leblon beach begins

Praia do Leblon is the southern continuation of Ipanema’s shoreline. The canal from the Lagoa neighbourhood marks the boundary between the two beaches. Leblon runs from Jardim de Alah to the cliffs along Niemeyer Avenue, with Morro Dois Irmãos rising behind the coast.

The beach is part of an upscale neighbourhood, but its sand is shared by families and people from the communities on the surrounding slopes. That mix gives the waterfront its own character. Leblon is often quieter than Ipanema, with a more family-oriented atmosphere along parts of the shore.

Beach sports and the sea

The long sand strip has room for volleyball, football, footvolley and beach tennis. When the sea is rough, surfers may use the waves, but swimming calls for care: the water can be rough, and a strong undertow has been reported along this stretch. Conditions at the canal mouth can also be less clean after heavy rain. In that case, people tend to gather near lifeguard towers 11 and 12 instead.

At the beach’s far end, Baixo Bebê has activities, toys and amenities for families with children. For a view over the Leblon and Ipanema coastline, head to the lookout near the Vidigal climb.

A sunset stop on the waterfront

The view toward Morro Dois Irmãos is a reason to stay into the evening. The beach also has simple bars along the waterfront, where you can order a caipirinha and watch the scene on the sand. Vendors pass through selling drinks and beach items, including coconut water and beer.

Chair and umbrella rentals are available, though prices for beach services and snacks are higher here than at some other beaches. Card payment has been reported as an option for rentals. If you plan to swim, check the sea conditions first and keep clear of the canal after heavy rain.
