Pista Cláudio Coutinho
Hike

Pista Cláudio Coutinho

Walk Pista Cláudio Coutinho in Urca for a shaded coastal route beside Sugarloaf, forest wildlife and a trail connection to Morro da Urca.

Pista Cláudio Coutinho is a coastal walking path in Urca, beside Praia Vermelha and Sugarloaf Mountain. The shaded route runs between the sea and the mountain, with places to pause and views towards the beach and city. Look out for birds and marmosets in the surrounding Atlantic Forest. A branch from the path leads to the trail up Morro da Urca, so you can turn a gentle walk into a steeper hike. The main path is mostly flat, though some sections of the connected trails are more demanding.

A coastal path in Urca

The path begins by Praia Vermelha and follows the shore around the lower slopes of Sugarloaf Mountain. Its shade and mostly level terrain make the main route a gentler option than the hike that branches off towards Morro da Urca.

Along the way, the setting shifts between the water and Atlantic Forest vegetation. Benches provide places to rest, and the route is used by people walking and running.

Wildlife and the Morro da Urca trail

Birds and marmosets can be seen among the trees. Marmosets are not native to Rio de Janeiro, but they have spread through the city. Give wildlife space and do not feed the animals.

To make the outing more strenuous, take the branch leading uphill to Morro da Urca. The added climb is a different kind of walk from the coastal path, so allow time to pace yourself and wear shoes suited to uneven, steep sections.
