Museu de Arte Moderna do Rio de Janeiro

Visit MAM Rio in Flamengo Park for changing modern art exhibitions, airy galleries and views across the bay towards Sugarloaf Mountain.

The Museu de Arte Moderna do Rio de Janeiro (MAM) sits in Flamengo Park, in a modernist concrete-and-glass building designed by Brazilian architect Affonso Eduardo Reidy. Its airy galleries host changing exhibitions of modern and contemporary art, including work by Brazilian artists. Even if you spend little time with the exhibitions, the building’s open spaces and views across the bay towards Sugarloaf Mountain give you reasons to stop. Pair your visit with a walk through the surrounding park on a pleasant day.

Reidy’s modernist building

The museum’s home is one of the main reasons to visit. Brazilian architect Affonso Eduardo Reidy designed the concrete-and-glass building, which dates to the 1950s. Large windows and open spaces connect the galleries with their setting in Flamengo Park.

The structure has a broad open area beneath it, used for activities including dance classes and roller skating. Inside, an imposing concrete ceiling and a prominent staircase give the building a strong presence without closing off its airy feel.

Art and the surrounding park

MAM presents changing exhibitions of modern and contemporary art. Brazilian artists are an important part of its programme, and displays can bring together work from the museum’s collections. The exhibitions change, so the works on view depend on when you visit.

The galleries look towards the bay and Sugarloaf Mountain. Outside, Flamengo Park gives you space to continue your visit with a walk. The museum is also within walking distance of Rio’s Centro, and Glória metro station is another nearby access point.
