Rui Barbosa’s home in Botafogo

The pink mansion at Rua São Clemente, 134, dates from 1849. Rui Barbosa lived here from 1895 to 1923. A jurist, politician, lawyer and intellectual, he was also a writer and diplomat. His residence later became a museum dedicated to preserving his personal legacy and connecting it with Brazilian history and literature.

The museum’s setting gives the visit its focus: this is a former home, with original furnishings and personal belongings displayed in the rooms. The house also stood among the grand residences on this Botafogo street. It is close to Botafogo metro station.

The library and the gardens

The extensive library is a central part of the house museum, with a collection that reflects Barbosa’s intellectual life. Exhibits and objects from his home add context to the books and to his public role in Brazil. The foundation also preserves his archives and the intellectual property of his work.

Outside, the gardens offer a quieter part of the visit and a place to take a break from the city. The grounds are also used for cultural activities, including storytelling in a specially designed children’s library. Some areas or library sections can be temporarily closed, so check their status before setting out.
