Mosteiro de São Bento

Visit Mosteiro de São Bento in downtown Rio to see its gilded Baroque church, carved rosewood altars and art nouveau iron gate.

Mosteiro de São Bento is a Benedictine abbey on Morro de São Bento in downtown Rio de Janeiro, founded by monks from Bahia in 1590. The church’s restrained exterior gives little hint of the gilded Baroque interior: look for the carved rosewood altars, detailed woodwork and art nouveau iron gate. Gregorian chant accompanies services at set times during the week and on weekends. The monastery itself has restricted visits, so plan to see the church and check the abbey’s visitor information before setting out.

A monastery founded in 1590

Benedictine monks from Bahia founded Mosteiro de São Bento in 1590, at the request of people in the newly established city of São Sebastião, now Rio de Janeiro. The monastery stands on Morro de São Bento in the city centre. It was the second religious order to establish a residence in Rio, after the Jesuits.

The monks first stayed in a simple inn near the hill. Funds for building the monastery were available by 1617, and work on the Baroque church began in 1633. The church was completed in 1755. The complex includes the abbey and the Church of Our Lady of Montserrat; visits to the monastery itself are restricted.

A plain façade and a gilded interior

The church’s exterior is relatively simple, with two towers topped by pyramidal forms. Inside, the effect changes sharply: gold leaf covers much of the richly carved decoration, including the altars, arches and ceiling. Rosewood altars, spiral columns and painted details reward a slow look around the church.

The main altar brings together layers of carved wood with gilded surfaces. The contrast between the modest façade and the elaborate interior is central to the building’s character. Before entering, look for the art nouveau iron gate.

Gregorian chant and visiting the church

Gregorian chant can be heard during services at set times: 5:15pm Monday to Friday, 8am Saturday and 10am Sunday. If hearing the chant is part of your visit, plan around one of these services and check current visitor information before you go.

The church is on Rua Dom Gerardo in downtown Rio. The site recommends arranging tickets in advance. Early visits or later afternoons may be quieter, and road closures during Carnival events can affect the approach.
