Hike

Mirante Sacopã

Walk the short trail to Mirante Sacopã in Rio de Janeiro for views over Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas, Ipanema and the ocean.

Mirante Sacopã is a small viewpoint on Morro do Sacopã, between Lagoa and Leblon in Rio de Janeiro. The short, easy uphill walk takes about 10 to 15 minutes, with the route beginning at Parque Natural Municipal da Catacumba, where sculptures and signs mark the way. At the top, look out over Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas, Ipanema and the ocean. The space is limited, so it suits a brief nature break more than a long stop. Take care on the descent after rain, when the path can be slippery.

The route through Catacumba Park

The entrance to the trail is through Parque Natural Municipal da Catacumba, on the Lagoa side of Morro do Sacopã. Sculptures and signs help guide the way. The climb to the viewpoint usually takes 10 to 15 minutes and is described as short and easy, though sturdy shoes are a sensible choice for the uneven path.

After rain, pay particular attention on the way down: the descent can be slippery. The trail is cash-only.

Views from the top

Mirante Sacopã looks out across Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas, Ipanema and the ocean. The lagoon is a prominent feature of the view, set among Rio's South Zone. The viewing area is small, with room for only a few people at once, so plan for a short stop and allow others space to enjoy the outlook too.
