Ipanema Beach

Visit Ipanema Beach in Rio de Janeiro for views of the Dois Irmãos peaks, beach sports and a sunset watched from the sand or Arpoador.

Ipanema Beach stretches along Rio de Janeiro’s southern coast, with pale sand, ocean views and the Dois Irmãos peaks at its western end. The beach is known around the world through the bossa nova song “The Girl from Ipanema,” but it is also part of everyday city life: people swim, stroll and play beach sports here. Come to relax by the water or watch the sunset from Arpoador. It is lively and can get crowded, so this is better for a social beach day than a quiet escape.

A beach shaped by music and city life

Ipanema’s international fame is closely tied to the bossa nova song “The Girl from Ipanema.” The beach also draws people for the everyday pleasures of Rio’s coast: walking along the sand, swimming, sunbathing and watching games of volleyball and beach soccer. Its atmosphere is active, with people using the shoreline throughout the day.

Beach sections and the Arpoador sunset

Lifeguard posts, called postos, mark different stretches of the beach, each with its own mix of beachgoers. Posto 9 is associated with younger visitors, surfers and artists, while the area near Rua Farme de Amoedo is known as a popular LGBTQ+ gathering spot.

At the eastern end, Arpoador Rock looks across the water toward the Dois Irmãos peaks. People gather there and along the beach as the sun goes down. Ipanema can be busy, but there is room to walk and spend time on the sand.
