Igreja Nossa Senhora do Carmo da Antiga Sé

Visit Igreja Nossa Senhora do Carmo da Antiga Sé in central Rio to see its gilded interior and learn about the royal ceremonies held here.

Igreja Nossa Senhora do Carmo da Antiga Sé is a historic church on Rua Sete de Setembro in central Rio de Janeiro. Its story begins in 1590, and its interior is known for restored details, sacred images and extensive gold decoration. The church was the setting for the coronations of Pedro I and Pedro II, as well as Princess Isabel’s wedding. It also contains the burial place of Pedro Álvares Cabral. Look closely at the gilded ornament and images, and ask the church keeper about the building’s past.

From a Carmelite hermitage to a church

The church’s history begins in 1590, when Carmelite friars received the Hermitage of Our Lady of Ó for their community. In 1761, the Carmelites laid the first stone for a new church dedicated to Our Lady of Mount Carmel. The building was inaugurated in 1770.

Its long history is tied to the changing religious life of Rio. From 1900 until 1976, the church served as the city’s diocesan cathedral. It is also known as Igreja Nossa Senhora do Carmo da Antiga Sé, or the Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel of the Old See.

Royal ceremonies and a burial place

The church was the site of the coronations of Pedro I and Pedro II. Princess Isabel’s wedding also took place here, giving the building a place in the history of Brazil’s monarchy.

Pedro Álvares Cabral, associated with the Portuguese arrival in Brazil, is buried at the church. These connections make the visit relevant to visitors interested in Rio’s religious and political history, as well as its architecture.

Details inside the church

Inside, look for the gold ornament and sacred images. The church’s restoration has renewed its interior, while preserving the decorative work that gives the space its distinctive appearance. Music may be playing during a visit.

A conversation with the church keeper can add historical context to what you see. The church is in a culturally significant part of central Rio, and Praça XV is nearby, where an antique market takes place on Saturday mornings.
