Fábrica Bhering
Landmark

Fábrica Bhering

Explore six floors of artist studios inside Fábrica Bhering, a former chocolate factory in Rio, then visit the rooftop cafe and bar for city views.

In Santo Cristo, Fábrica Bhering turns a former chocolate factory into a six-floor cultural center for artists and their work. The factory, inaugurated in 1880 as Brazil’s first chocolate factory, now houses more than 70 artists in small studios. Look for contemporary art, vintage furniture and other creative businesses as you explore the building. Food and craft beer are available, and the top floor has an open-air cafe and bar with views across Rio. Go earlier in the day to find more studios open.

From chocolate factory to art center

Fábrica Bhering opened in 1880 as Brazil’s first chocolate factory. The former industrial building in Santo Cristo has since been repurposed as a cultural center, with studios and creative spaces spread over six floors.

More than 70 artists work in small studios here, making the building a place to encounter art where it is created and shown. Its rooms also contain vintage furniture and other repurposed objects.

Exploring the six floors

The studios and exhibitions vary from space to space. Contemporary art, vintage furnishings and shops selling creative work give the visit a changing feel as you move through the former factory. The top floor has another group of studios, as well as an open-air cafe and bar with views over Rio.

Food and craft beer are available in the building, though dining options are limited. If you plan to browse the studios, go earlier in the day, since some may close before the building itself does. On Saturdays, Circuito Interno begins at 1 PM and brings additional events inside the restored factory. Its listed entry price is R$5 to R$10.
