Visit CCBB in downtown Rio for free art exhibitions, the Museum of Money and a look inside a neoclassical former bank building.

Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil, or CCBB, is an art and performance centre in downtown Rio de Janeiro, inside a neoclassical former bank building at 66 Rua Primeiro de Março. Its galleries host temporary exhibitions, while a permanent display traces the history of Banco do Brasil and Brazilian currency. You can also visit the Museum of Money on the fourth floor, browse the library, or check the programme for cinema, theatre and music. Admission to exhibitions is free, but each exhibition requires its own ticket.

CCBB occupies a historic building at 66 Rua Primeiro de Março in the Centro district. Its neoclassical design and central hall are part of the visit, alongside the exhibitions inside.

The building was erected in 1906 for the Commercial Association of Rio de Janeiro. Banco do Brasil acquired it in the 1920s, and it became a cultural centre in 1989. Today, galleries and venues for cultural events fill the former bank headquarters.

Exhibitions and the Museum of Money

Temporary exhibitions bring modern and contemporary art to CCBB, with artists and subjects changing over time. Check the centre’s current programme before your visit to see what is on during your dates.

The Museum of Money is on the fourth floor. Its displays explore Brazilian currency and the history of Banco do Brasil. Some exhibition information may be in Portuguese, so a translation app can help you follow the material.

More than galleries

The centre also has a library, cinema, theatre spaces and rooms for performances and cultural events. Its programme includes film screenings, music, theatre, talks and educational activities. Check the schedule if you want to plan around a particular screening or event.

There is a café, and the central hall provides a place to pause between galleries. The building’s historic interiors give the visit a different focus from the exhibitions themselves.

Tickets and planning your visit

Admission to exhibitions is free, but you need a separate ticket for each one. Tickets are available online and from on-site kiosks. If you are a foreign visitor, use a staffed booth: the self-service machines require a CPF. Staff can help with the ticket process.

Set aside about three hours to explore the floors at a comfortable pace. The centre is wheelchair accessible at its entrance and restroom. Opening hours are shown on the page; Tuesday is listed as closed.
