A long bridge spans across calm water

Manaus

Manaus is a common starting point for boat trips into the Amazon rainforest, and its downtown has a 19th-century opera house and a cast-iron market.

Manaus is the capital of Amazonas, Brazil's largest state, and a city of about two million people in the middle of the rainforest. It sits where the dark Rio Negro meets the sandy-colored Solimões, which join to form the Amazon. For a long stretch the two rivers run side by side before they fully mix, and boats run out to this point from the city.

The city grew rich on rubber in the late 1800s. Its downtown holds the Teatro Amazonas opera house and the cast-iron Mercado Adolpho Lisboa. A few days here pair well with trips to the Anavilhanas archipelago, a maze of river islands on the Rio Negro, or to jungle lodges reached by boat. Manaus works for travelers who want city sights and easy access to the forest in one trip. Plan two to four days in the city. The dry months, roughly June to November, suit trail walks, while high water brings boats into flooded forest.

Manaus in five

  1. Pack repellent for daytime mosquitoesThe Aedes mosquitoes that carry dengue bite in daylight, so use repellent on city days as well as on forest nights. Pack a repellent with DEET or picaridin and reapply it through the day.
  2. Check the river level before you book a boat tripWater levels in the Rio Negro and Solimões rise and fall by many metres between seasons, which decides which lakes, beaches and forest channels a boat can reach. Ask the operator which places are reachable in the month you visit.
  3. Carry reais in cash for boats and small shopsMany river boat crews, ferries and market stalls take cash or Pix, Brazil's instant bank transfer, and cannot always take a card. Keep small notes so you can pay without waiting for a card terminal.
  4. Set up an eSIM before you landMobile signal drops away on the river and in the forest, so download maps, tickets and your booking confirmations while you still have a connection in the city.Phones and eSIM
  5. Get insurance that covers evacuation from the forestLodges and boat trips can be hours from a hospital, so check that your policy covers medical evacuation from remote areas and not only treatment in a city hospital.Travel insurance

Manaus FAQ

Is Manaus worth visiting?

Yes, if you want the Rio Negro, the meeting of the waters and a city base for boat trips into the forest. It is a poor choice if you want a city beach holiday or only a short stop on a route.

What is the best time to visit Manaus?

July to September are the best months, when the rain has mostly stopped and the river beaches appear. October and November are hot and the water is at its lowest.

Do you need a tour to see the Amazon from Manaus?

You can take a public boat, but the lakes and forest channels are hard to reach on your own, so a guided trip is the easier option. Ask what the boat, guide and meals include before you pay.

Is it safe to walk around Manaus?

Keep valuables out of sight, avoid walking alone at night in quiet areas, and use app rides or radio taxis after dark. Ask your hotel which streets to avoid.
