Orla Brigitte Bardot

Orla Bardot boardwalk in Búzios: the Brigitte Bardot bronze statue, sea views, Rua das Pedras nearby and tips for an evening walk.

Orla Bardot is the seafront promenade of Armação dos Búzios, laid out as a tribute to Brigitte Bardot, the French actress whose visit in the 1960s turned a quiet fishing village into a holiday destination. A bronze statue of her faces the sea along a cobblestone walk with benches and water views. Rua das Pedras leads to it, and restaurants, bars and shops line the area, many open late. The promenade is open around the clock and pleasant by day or after dark. Come for a slow walk, a photo at the statue and a look at the sculptures across town.

How Bardot put Búzios on the map

Until the early 1960s, Búzios was an ordinary fishing village. Brigitte Bardot arrived in 1964 with her Brazilian boyfriend, Bob Zagury, to get away from press attention. Her visit drew international notice, and the couple passed word of the place to their circle of friends. Before long Búzios had become one of the most fashionable beach destinations in Brazil.

A rumour in town says she planned a short holiday and stayed a month. Whatever the exact length, her open affection for the place is what carried the name of Búzios abroad. The promenade carries her name as a tribute.

The statue by the water

The bronze statue is the work of the artist Christina Motta. It shows Bardot gazing out over the turquoise water with a straw hat in her hand. The figure faces the sea, and the stretch around it is the most photographed part of the walk.

Beside the statue, local fishermen go about their day, which gives the spot a working-harbour feel that matches the village Búzios once was. There is little signage explaining the statue or the art nearby, so knowing the story beforehand makes the stop more meaningful.

Walking the promenade

The Orla Bardot is a cobblestone boardwalk that hugs the shoreline, with benches and open views of the bay. If you walk north along Rua das Pedras, the pedestrian-only street known for its nightlife, you reach the boardwalk. From there the path links Praia do Canto with Armação and continues around to Ossos Beach.

The walk is pleasant in daylight, when the water shines, and after dark, when the views take on a more romantic mood. Bars, restaurants and shops in the area stay open late, so many people come after dinner.

Facilities and things to do nearby

The area is easy to use with family. It has a playground, a volleyball court, picnic tables, barbecue grills and a public restroom, and it is suitable for children. Dogs are allowed on the promenade.

At some points along the coast you can arrange water activities such as a boat taxi, jet skis and snorkelling. Sculptures are scattered around Búzios, some of them in the sea, so it is worth looking around rather than stopping only at the statue.

In high season the seafront is very crowded and prices in town rise. Outside those weeks the walk is calmer.
