Búzios is a peninsula and beach town on the Atlantic coast of Rio de Janeiro state, in southeastern Brazil, about three hours by road from Rio de Janeiro. The area was a fishing village before it grew into a resort. Its beaches range from calm bays with clear water to open beaches with stronger surf on the outer coast. Brigitte Bardot's visit in 1964 drew international attention to the town.
Most visits center on the beaches, and the town's shops, bars and restaurants sit close to the water. Rua das Pedras, the cobblestone street in the center, is the main place to walk and eat in the evening. A long weekend covers the main beaches on a first visit, and a week leaves time to rent a car and see the outer coast. December to March is the busiest period, when the weather is warmest and the town is most crowded. April, May, September and October bring mild weather and calmer beaches.
