Banja Luka is the second-largest city in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the largest in Republika Srpska. It lies on both banks of the Vrbas River in a flat valley in the country’s northwest. Kastel fortress stands in the center on the site of a Roman military camp. Ferhadija Mosque, built in 1579 and reopened in May 2016 after its destruction during the 1990s war, is one of the city’s Ottoman landmarks. On Gospodska Street, neo-Renaissance and Secession buildings line the main pedestrian route. The former railway station, built in 1891, now houses the Museum of Modern Art of Republika Srpska.
The city’s museums and religious buildings offer more to see, including the Museum of Republika Srpska and the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour. The Vrbas hosted European rafting championships in 2005 and 2019. Nearby spa sites include Srpske Toplice, Slatina and Laktaši. July is the warmest month, averaging 22.5 °C; January averages 1.3 °C, and it snows almost every winter. Rain falls on about 104 days a year. Pack for warm summer days and cold winter weather if your plans include walking around the city.

Is Banja Luka worth visiting?
Yes for a green riverside city, the Kastel fortress and an easy half-day of sights, plus rafting if you like moving water. It is quieter than Sarajevo and Mostar.
When is the best time to raft the Vrbas?
The regional tourist organization says tours run all year and that spring or summer is best. Water level and weather change the grade, so confirm with the operator.
How do you get from Sarajevo to Banja Luka?
By intercity bus; the Sarajevo tourist board lists daily lines to Banja Luka from the main bus station. Check the timetable at the station or the operator's page.
How long should you spend in Banja Luka?
One night covers Kastel, Gospodska street and the Trappist abbey. Add a second day for a Vrbas rafting run or Krupa na Vrbasu.
Is Banja Luka in Bosnia or Republika Srpska?
Both: Republika Srpska is one of the two entities of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Banja Luka is its largest city and administrative center. You use the same convertible mark.
