Bangladesh is a South Asian country on the Bay of Bengal, surrounded almost entirely by India, with a small border with Myanmar in the southeast. Dhaka is the capital and largest city. Chittagong, the second-largest city, is the busiest port. The country is called the Land of Rivers because the Ganges, Brahmaputra and Meghna form a vast delta, and most of its land lies less than 12 metres above sea level.
A major draw is the Sundarbans, the world's largest mangrove forest, which covers about 6,000 square kilometres in the southwest and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Boat trips into the mangroves are the usual way to look for Bengal tigers and saltwater crocodiles. Dhaka adds Mughal-era sites such as Lalbagh Fort and Bara Katra, along with crafts such as Jamdani muslin and Nakshi Kantha embroidery. The mild winter from October to March is generally the most comfortable season. Check weather warnings before traveling to coastal areas, because floods and cyclones occur almost every year.
Five things to know before Bangladesh
- Get a visa before you fly if you can
US, Canadian, Australian and European passports are listed for a visa on arrival of up to 30 days, but it is granted at the officer's discretion. A visa from an embassy before travel avoids the risk of refusal at the airport. Visas and entry
- Pre-register for the visa on arrival online
Eligible visitors can pre-register their visa on arrival online on the Special Branch portal before they travel. Electronic arrival and departure forms may also be required. Special Branch portal
- Book the Sundarbans as a licensed boat trip
Visitors enter the mangrove forest with a Forest Department permit and an armed guard, arranged through licensed boat operators from Khulna or Mongla. Most trips run two or three nights.
- Allow extra time for every road journey
Dhaka traffic can turn a short drive into hours. Trains to Sreemangal and Chittagong and domestic flights to Cox's Bazar avoid the worst of it. Getting around
- Dress conservatively and plan around Ramadan
Loose clothing covering shoulders and legs is expected outside hotels. During Ramadan many restaurants close by day; the dates move earlier each year.

Bangladesh FAQ
Can I get a visa on arrival in Bangladesh?
US, Canadian, Australian and European passports are listed as eligible for a visa on arrival of up to 30 days, but it is granted at the officer's discretion. A visa from an embassy before you travel is the safer option.
When is the best time to visit Bangladesh?
November to February, when it is dry and mild. The monsoon from June to September floods large areas, and April to May brings heat and cyclone risk on the coast.
How do I visit the Sundarbans?
On a licensed boat trip, usually two or three nights from Khulna or Mongla. The operator arranges the forest permit and the guard that travels with every group.
Is Bangladesh easy to travel independently?
It is possible but tiring. Trains and river launches are cheap and interesting, but road travel is slow, few people outside cities speak English, and tourist infrastructure is thin.
What should I wear in Bangladesh?
Loose, modest clothes covering shoulders and legs. Women may want a scarf for mosques and rural areas.
