Lobito is a port city on Angola's Atlantic coast, in Benguela Province, next to the larger city of Benguela. The harbor has shaped the town for more than a century. The Benguela Railway begins here and was built to carry copper and other minerals from inland to the coast. Much of the center keeps its Portuguese colonial architecture, with older houses and public buildings along the bay.
Most visitors come for the waterfront and the Restinga, a narrow sandy spit that separates the bay from the open ocean. The port keeps the waterfront working, with boats and cargo moving through the bay. Lobito suits travelers who want a coastal stop with history and a working port. Plan one or two nights, and add a day trip to Benguela, which is about 30 to 40 minutes away by road. The cooler, drier months run from about May to October.
