Angola

Angola is a large country on Southern Africa's Atlantic coast, known for Luanda, its Portuguese colonial past and terrain that runs from arid coast to tropical forest. Roads outside towns are often poor, so allow extra time for road trips.

Angola is a large country on the western coast of Southern Africa, with the Atlantic Ocean to the west. Luanda, the capital and largest city, sits on the coast in the northwest and is the country's main economic and political center. Portugal's colonial presence began in the 16th century, when Luanda was founded in 1575, and Angola stayed a Portuguese colony for more than four centuries. Portuguese is the official language and the main language of government, schools and cities.

The land varies widely. An arid coastal strip runs from Namibia almost to Luanda, the interior has a humid plateau, the south and east have dry savanna, and the north and Cabinda have tropical forest. In the north the rains can last up to seven months, usually September to April. For drier weather, aim for the cacimbo months, about May to August, with heavy morning mist and the coolest weather in July and August. Allow extra time for the distances, since roads outside towns are often poor and a four-by-four is advised.

Five things to know before Angola

  1. Check the visa-free rule for your passport

UK and Canadian passport holders can visit for tourism without a visa for up to 30 days; Canada's advice adds a 90-day yearly cap. Work, study and business trips need a visa. Check other passports with Angola's immigration service. Visas and entry

  2. Carry a yellow fever certificate

Angola has yellow fever risk. The UK says South Africa and other countries ask for a certificate on arrival from Angola, and Canada's advice says Angola wants proof from all arrivals. Get vaccinated and carry it.

  3. Check passport validity and pages

UK advice asks for six months of validity beyond arrival and two blank pages. Overstays are fined daily and can stop you leaving until the fine is paid.

  4. Budget for long road days

Distances are large: Luanda to Lubango is a long day's drive or a domestic flight. Plan fewer places and fly the longest legs.

  5. Visit in the cooler dry season

June to September is the cacimbo season: dry, cooler and often overcast on the coast. Heavy rain falls from about November to April.

Angola FAQ

Do I need a visa for Angola as a tourist?

Not for tourism with a UK or Canadian passport: stays of up to 30 days are visa-free, and Canada's advice caps stays at 90 days per calendar year. For other passports, or work and business trips, check with Angola's immigration service.

Is Angola expensive to visit?

Luanda is costly for hotels and eating out. Costs drop outside the capital, but long distances mean flights or a driver add up.

What is the best time to visit Angola?

June to September, the dry and cooler cacimbo season. November to April brings heat and heavy rain, which can close roads.

Do I need a yellow fever vaccine for Angola?

Yes, get it. Canada's advice says Angola asks for proof of vaccination from all arrivals, and the UK says South Africa and other countries ask for the certificate when you arrive from Angola.

Can I travel overland from Angola to Namibia?

Yes, the main crossing is at Santa Clara and Oshikango in the south. Check the visa rules for Namibia before you cross.
