Phan Rang is a city in Ninh Thuan province on Vietnam's south-central coast, in one of the driest parts of the country. Its dry hills, sand and vineyards look different from the greener areas farther south and north. Most visitors come for the Cham heritage. The Po Klong Garai towers, on a hill above the city, are among the best-known Cham temple sites in Vietnam, and the nearby pottery villages still make pottery by hand.
The coast nearby has quiet beaches and bays, including Ninh Chữ, and the white sand dunes at Bau Trang are a short drive away. Phan Rang suits a slower trip: a few days for temples, markets and the sea, or a stop between the central beaches and the south. Plan on two to three days. January to March are the easiest months for beach time.

- Use Grab or Be for ridesGrab and Be are ride-hailing apps used across Vietnam. Check that drivers accept bookings in Phan Rang before you rely on them. Motorbike taxis are the usual fallback, so agree the fare first.Getting around
- Carry dong cash for small shops and marketsMarket stalls, food shops and many motorbike drivers take only cash, so withdraw dong from an ATM in the city center and keep small notes. Cards work mainly at hotels and larger restaurants.Money and costs
- Set up an eSIM or local SIM for mapsMaps, ride apps and the e-visa form all need mobile data. Viettel, Mobifone and Vinaphone are the main carriers, and a local SIM sold in Vietnam needs your passport to register.Phones and eSIM
- Visit Po Klong Garai before the midday heatThe Cham brick towers stand on a hill outside the city, with little shade on the climb. Go in the morning, wear a hat, and agree a return ride with your driver before you set off.
- Get an International Driving Permit before renting a scooterRiding a motorbike needs a license that covers motorbikes, and an International Driving Permit alongside your home license. Insurers can refuse claims from riders without a valid license, so check your policy first.Travel insurance
