War Remnants Museum

Visit the War Remnants Museum in Ho Chi Minh City for photographs, wartime artifacts and military vehicles, with a sobering view of the conflict.

In District 3, the War Remnants Museum presents Vietnam’s wartime history through photographs, documents, films and military equipment. The displays focus mainly on the Vietnam War, with material on the earlier conflict with France and the lasting effects of chemical weapons. Outside, tanks, aircraft and other military hardware fill the courtyard; inside, themed exhibitions include photographs, artifacts and accounts of the war’s impact. The images can be graphic and emotionally difficult. Allow time to read the exhibits, and consider an audio guide for added explanations.

A museum shaped by the war

War Remnants Museum

Opened to the public in 1975, the War Remnants Museum collects and displays material related to the wars in Vietnam and their consequences. Its focus is chiefly the Vietnam War, with some exhibits covering the earlier conflict with French colonial forces. The museum presents these events from a Vietnamese perspective, through photographs, documents, films and objects connected with the fighting and its aftermath.

The collection includes more than 20,000 documents, artifacts, films and photographs. More than 1,500 items are presented to the public in thematic exhibitions. The subjects include war crimes, the effects of Agent Orange, the struggle for independence and international opposition to the war. The displays also convey the human cost of conflict and the importance of peace.

Military equipment is displayed outdoors, including tanks, aircraft, helicopters, artillery and bombs. A recreated prison cell display known as the tiger cage gives context to accounts of imprisonment and torture. These exhibits set the scene before you enter the museum building.

Inside, themed rooms bring together photographs, written information, films and recovered artifacts. The Requiem collection honors photographers who died while covering the war. Other displays document the effects of chemical weapons, including Agent Orange, and the impact of the conflict on civilians. Some exhibitions include graphic images, so move at your own pace and step away when you need to.

How to plan your visit

Give yourself at least two hours to see the courtyard and the indoor exhibitions; visitors who stop to read the displays may want longer. Starting on an upper floor and working downward is one way to finish with less intense material. An audio guide is available for further explanations of exhibits and photographs.

The museum can become busier later in the day, so an early visit gives you more room to move through the displays. Be prepared for difficult subject matter: the photographs and accounts can be upsetting. If you are travelling with children, consider their age and comfort with graphic material before entering the exhibition rooms.
