Hoan Kiem Lake

Walk beside Hanoi’s Hoan Kiem Lake, see Turtle Tower and cross the red Húc Bridge to Ngọc Sơn Temple on an island at the lake’s northern end.

Hoàn Kiếm Lake sits in central Hanoi, beside the Old Quarter, with tree-lined paths, gardens and views of Turtle Tower rising from the water. The lake’s name, “Lake of the Returned Sword,” comes from a legend about Emperor Lê Lợi and a magic sword reclaimed by a turtle. At the northern end, a red bridge leads to Ngọc Sơn Temple on an island. Come for a walk, watch the lakeside routines, or return after dark to see the paths and bridge lit up.

The legend behind the lake’s name

Hoàn Kiếm means “Lake of the Returned Sword.” The best-known version of the story links the lake to Lê Lợi, who became emperor after leading resistance against the Ming invaders. A divine sword helped him win the war. Later, while he was on the lake, a golden turtle appeared and took the sword back beneath the water, returning it to its owners. The story gives the lake a place in Hanoi’s spiritual history as well as its city life.

Turtle Tower, or Tháp Rùa, stands on a small island in the middle of the water and recalls the turtle in the legend. The tower is described as combining European and Vietnamese architectural influences. It is one of the lake’s most recognisable landmarks, particularly when the surrounding lights come on after sunset.

Ngọc Sơn Temple and the red bridge

At the lake’s northern end, a small island known as Pearl Island is home to Ngọc Sơn Temple. The red Húc Bridge connects the shore to the island, making the crossing part of the visit. The temple is associated with General Trần Hưng Đạo and has architectural features linked to different periods of Vietnamese history. Its setting, with the bridge and temple framed by trees and water, is a popular subject for photographs.

The lake itself is free to visit, but admission is charged for Ngọc Sơn Temple. One reported ticket price is VND 20,000; check locally for the current fee before you go. If you plan to enter, allow time to see the temple as well as walk across the bridge.

A walk through changing scenes

A path follows the lake’s edge for about 1.7 kilometres, passing trees, flowers and places to sit. The route gives you views across the water to Turtle Tower and toward the island at the northern end. Cafés and other city sights are nearby, so the walk can fit between stops in the Old Quarter or continue into an evening out.

The lake has a different rhythm through the day. Early mornings bring people out to practise tai chi, jog, dance and exercise. Later, couples and photographers gather along the water, while the paths take on a livelier feel in the evening. After sunset, lights along the walk and around the bridge reflect on the lake.

Weekend pedestrian streets

On weekends, streets around the lake become a pedestrian area, with activities that include music, dance and traditional Vietnamese games. This gives the lakeside a more social feel than a regular walk, and the nearby Old Quarter is close enough to explore on foot. The area can be busy, especially around popular photo spots, so take your time on the paths and be considerate of people using them to exercise or spend time together.
