Tashkent is the capital of Uzbekistan and the largest city in Central Asia. It sits in the northeast of the country, on a plain near the Tian Shan foothills. International flights land here, and the city is a common first stop before Samarkand and Bukhara, a few hours away by train.
The city mixes old and new. The Old City, around the Kukeldash Madrasah and the Hazrati Imam complex, keeps older streets and tiled domes. Chorsu Bazaar, under a large blue dome, sells fruit, spices, bread and dried goods. The metro opened in 1977, and its stations have decorated halls. Much of the city was rebuilt after the 1966 earthquake, so its wide avenues look different from the older towns farther west. Plan two to three days for a short break or the opening days of a longer trip. April and May, and September and October, are the most comfortable months, since summers are hot and winters are cold.
