Fergana Valley

The Fergana Valley draws travelers to silk towns, Kokand's khan palace and orchard countryside, at a slower pace than the big Uzbek cities.

The Fergana Valley is a large, fertile basin in eastern Uzbekistan that also reaches into Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan. The Uzbek side includes the cities of Fergana, Kokand, Margilan, Andijan and Namangan. Orchards, cotton fields and irrigation canals fill the flat valley floor, with mountains rising at its edges. Its towns are spread across the valley, so each day trip takes a drive.

Travelers come for Kokand's Khudayar Khan Palace, a 19th-century palace in the former khanate capital, for Margilan's silk workshops and ikat weaving, and for the ceramics of Rishtan. A slow trip of three to five days works well, built around day trips between towns, with more time if you want to hike in the surrounding ranges. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons, since summer heat is strong in the lowland towns.

Fergana Valley FAQ

Is the Fergana Valley worth visiting?

Yes if you want silk and ikat workshops, ceramic towns and a khan's palace away from the Samarkand and Bukhara routes. It is a poor choice if you want a week of big-city sights in one place, because the towns are spread across the valley.

How do you get to the Fergana Valley?

Fly to Fergana, or travel from Tashkent by road or rail. Shared taxis and minibuses link the towns, so allow more time than the map suggests.

Which town should you base in?

Fergana city suits first visits because of its transport links. Margilan and Kokand work well for a few nights of workshops and history, with day trips to the others.

Do I need a visa for Uzbekistan?

Many passports enter visa-free for short stays, and others need an e-visa. Check the official e-visa portal before you book flights, because the list of countries changes.

Is Margilan worth visiting?

Yes for silk weaving and ikat dye workshops. One night is enough unless you want a full day in the workshops.

What should I wear in the Fergana Valley?

Cover shoulders and knees for mosques and shrines, and bring a scarf. Light clothes work in summer, but spring and autumn evenings can be cool.
