Vernal Fall

Hike Yosemite Valley’s Mist Trail to Vernal Fall for close waterfall views, steep stone steps and the option to continue toward Nevada Fall.

Vernal Fall is reached by a steep hike in Yosemite Valley, where the Mist Trail climbs beside the Merced River to the waterfall. The roughly five-mile round trip is a workout, with stone steps and wet, uneven surfaces near the spray. The climb brings close views of the cascade, and you can continue toward Nevada Fall for a longer outing. Choose sturdy shoes, carry water and allow time for breaks. The path is especially rewarding when the waterfall is flowing strongly, but expect to get wet near the falls.

The climb beside the Merced River

The route starts near Happy Isles and shuttle stop 16, with a walk beside the Merced River before the trail climbs toward the footbridge. From there, the ascent becomes steeper. The Mist Trail passes close to Vernal Fall, where spray can reach the path and make the stone steps slick.

The climb is demanding, with uneven rock steps and a sustained uphill section. Take your time, drink water and use footwear with good traction. A rain jacket or poncho can help if you continue close to the waterfall. The footbridge has water-refill stations and restrooms; those facilities are not available farther along the trail.

Continuing to Nevada Fall

You can turn back after Vernal Fall or keep climbing toward Nevada Fall. Continuing makes for a longer, more strenuous hike, with views of both waterfalls along the way. Some hikers return via Clark Point, which provides another route down; check current trail conditions before setting out, as access on the Mist Trail can change.

For a quieter stretch, continue beyond the popular Vernal Fall section toward Nevada Fall. The trail includes rocky footing, so allow time for careful steps on the descent. Bring snacks and enough water for the route you choose, and plan breaks rather than rushing the climb.
