West Thumb Information Station

Visit West Thumb Information Station beside Yellowstone Lake for ranger information, a historic 1925 log building and boardwalks past shoreline hot springs.

West Thumb Information Station is a small historic visitor center on Grand Loop Road, beside Yellowstone Lake in Yellowstone National Park. Stop for park information, exhibits and a chance to speak with a ranger before walking the adjacent West Thumb Geyser Basin. Boardwalks pass brightly colored pools, paint pots and shoreline geysers; some hot springs reach into the lake. The short inner and outer loops also give you a chance to watch for birds along the water. The 1925 log building becomes a warming hut in winter.

In winter, the station serves as the West Thumb Warming Hut. Visitors can warm up inside, read exhibits about the area’s history and winter topics, and ask an interpretive staff member questions. The building’s role changes with the season, so it remains a useful stop beyond the summer visitor-center period.
