A scenic view of a lush, green valley

Willamette Valley

Most visits here are built around Pinot Noir, with tasting rooms in the hills and farm towns about an hour's drive from Portland.

Willamette Valley is a farming valley in western Oregon, running north to south between the Coast Range and the Cascade Range. The Willamette River flows through it. Towns line the valley from the Portland area in the north to Eugene in the south. Most of the wineries sit in the hills around Dundee and McMinnville, where the soil and the cool, damp climate suit Pinot Noir. Between the vineyards, orchards, vegetable fields and grass seed farms still work the land.

The valley suits a wine-focused trip, a food-led weekend or a slow drive through small towns. You can base yourself in one town and reach nearby tasting rooms by car, which keeps the driving short. Late spring through early fall is the most comfortable time to visit, when the vines are green and the weather is mild. The fall harvest brings busy weeks in the vineyards. Plan at least two full days, or three to four to cover several sub-areas and the river towns.

How do you get to Willamette Valley from Portland?

Drive about an hour on Highway 99W to the main wine towns, or book a tour from the city. Trains and buses do not reach most wineries, so a car or a tour is the practical choice.

Where should I stay in Willamette Valley?

Dundee and McMinnville suit a wine-focused trip, with tasting rooms a short drive from your bed. Portland suits a trip that mixes city food with wine days, and it is about an hour by car from the wineries.

When is the best time to visit Willamette Valley?

May, June, September and October are the best months. The weather is dry and mild, and September and October are harvest season, when the vineyards are busy. Winter is wet and quiet.

What wine is Willamette Valley known for?

Pinot Noir is the valley's best-known wine. Pinot Gris and Chardonnay are also grown here.
