The Folger is an independent research library on Capitol Hill, with a collection spanning printed works by William Shakespeare and other rare materials from the early modern period. Its holdings include books, manuscripts, art and objects connected to the playwright and his era. A First Folio is on display in the exhibition galleries.

The library was founded by Henry Clay Folger and Emily Jordan Folger. In the galleries, exhibits draw on the collection to explore Shakespeare’s works and their history. The displays are designed for more than quiet looking: activities invite visitors to set type for printing, fold paper into books and create a Shakespeare scene.

Details inside and out

The building’s exterior is white marble, with sculpted scenes from Shakespeare’s plays. Architect Paul Philippe Cret designed it in an Art Deco style, and the library was dedicated in 1932. Henry Clay Folger selected the Shakespeare-related inscriptions found around the property.

Inside, Tudor-inspired details include oak paneling, high plaster ceilings and ornamental floor tiles. The building also has gardens planted with native species. Together, the galleries, interior rooms and outdoor spaces give visitors several ways to explore the site beyond its books.

Theater, research and family activities

Folger Theatre presents Shakespeare plays and other productions. The intimate Elizabethan-style theater is on the building’s second floor. Drinks from the café can be taken into the theater, but food cannot. Performance tickets are separate from a visit to the exhibitions, so check the current schedule if you want to attend a show.

The library also serves researchers, with rare materials from the early modern period and a Reading Room that has limited public access. Check the Folger website for the times when the room is open to visitors. Families can look for activities aimed at children, including a Discovery Trail for ages 3 to 5, with images from the collection to find in the exhibition hall. The café and gift shop are additional stops within the building.
