Tucson is a desert city in southern Arizona, with the Tucson Mountains to the west and the Rincon Mountains to the east. Saguaro National Park is split into two districts on either side of the city, the Tucson Mountain District to the west and the Rincon Mountain District to the east. Each has its own trails through saguaro forest, so a morning walk can start before the heat builds. The food is a reason to go too. UNESCO named Tucson a City of Gastronomy in 2015, and Sonoran cooking relies on tepary beans, chiles and mesquite.
Winter and spring suit most trips, when daytime temperatures are comfortable for hiking and eating outdoors. Summer is much hotter, so plan early starts on the trails and afternoons indoors. Allow at least three days for the national park, a few foothill trails and the city's restaurants. Add a day to drive up Mount Lemmon, which rises above 9,000 feet and is much cooler than the valley floor.
Tucson in five
- Visit Saguaro early in the daySaguaro National Park has two districts on either side of the city, and shade is scarce on most trails. Walk at sunrise and finish before the afternoon heat, especially from May to September.Saguaro National Park
- Pay the Saguaro entry fee once per vehicleThe park lists $25 per private vehicle, sold as a dated receipt. Check the park page for current validity and the annual pass options.National park fee for visitors
- Plan around the heat, not the calendarHighs pass 38°C from June to August. Spend midday in a museum, a pool or a café, and shift sightseeing and trails to early morning and evening.
- Eat Sonoran, not generic MexicanLook for Sonoran hot dogs, carne asada and flour tortillas, and mix them with a market or a food truck day. Reserve ahead only for the busiest restaurants.
- Pair Tucson with Phoenix or SedonaGreater Phoenix is under two hours by car, and Sedona is a longer drive north. Tucson works best with two or three nights before the next leg.Greater Phoenix
