Starved Rock State Park

Starved Rock State Park

Go for the sandstone canyons, waterfall trails and river overlooks, and in winter for bald eagles along the Illinois River.

Starved Rock State Park is in north-central Illinois, near the town of Utica and about 90 miles southwest of Chicago. Visitors come for sandstone bluffs and canyons cut above the Illinois River, where trails pass waterfalls, rock ledges and overlooks. The park takes its name from a local legend about a band of Illinois people trapped on the rock during a siege by rival tribes. The views shift with the seasons, from green canyon walls in spring to open bluffs in winter.

It works as a day trip from Chicago, a weekend of hiking, or a longer stay at the park's lodge or campgrounds. Spring and fall are the most comfortable seasons for walking the canyons. Winter brings bald eagles along the river, but some trail sections can be icy, so bring traction for those stretches. Plan one to two days to see the main canyons without rushing.
