At 50 Moraga Ave in the Presidio, the Presidio Officers’ Club is a museum and cultural center tracing the area’s history from Ohlone heritage and the Spanish period through its long U.S. Army tenure. Exhibits and preserved artifacts fill a restored historic building, including surviving adobe walls from the early 1800s. Entry to the museum is free. Take time to look at the old cannons and ask a docent about the displays; the club also has a restaurant and event spaces.

The Presidio Officers’ Club has served different purposes since it was a home for Spanish soldiers and their families in the early 1800s. Its history is visible in the surviving adobe brick walls at the front of the building. During a rehabilitation completed in 2014, those walls were restored, exposed and strengthened against earthquakes.

Today, the building houses a museum and cultural center. Its preserved structure provides a setting for exhibits about the Presidio’s changing history.

The exhibits connect Ohlone heritage, the Spanish colonial period and the Presidio’s long U.S. Army tenure. Displays include historical artifacts and old cannons, with material spanning Native American, Spanish, U.S. and Asian American histories. The exhibition layout is easy to follow, so you can move through the different periods at your own pace.

The Heritage Gallery is a useful place to ask questions. Docents can offer context on the displays and the building’s history.

Planning your visit

Museum entry is free. The Officers’ Club is open to the public Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and closed the other days of the week. The museum is a compact stop, so you can include it in a wider visit to the Presidio rather than setting aside a full day.

The building also contains a restaurant and event spaces, including a large ballroom used for private events and weddings. These are separate reasons to visit, so check the venue’s website if you are planning a meal or an event.
