Fort Adams State Park

Visit Fort Adams State Park in Newport for guided fort tours, underground tunnels, a small harbor beach and views across Narragansett Bay.

At the entrance to Newport Harbor in Newport, Rhode Island, Fort Adams State Park brings together a major coastal fort, open lawns and views across Narragansett Bay. Walk around the fort, follow the Bay Walk or take a guided tour to see its tunnels and interior. The grounds are also good for a picnic, fishing or a swim at the small beach. In summer, the park hosts the Newport Folk Festival and Newport Jazz Festival, so check event plans before choosing a quiet day outdoors.

Fort Adams stands at the mouth of Newport Harbor, where the park looks out over Narragansett Bay and the East Passage. The first fortification here was established in 1799 and named for President John Adams. The structure visible today was built between 1824 and 1857 as a coastal defense work.

Its scale is part of the visit. The design was intended to hold 468 cannons and house 2,400 troops. Fort Adams is recognized as the largest coastal fortification in the United States and as an important example of military architecture from the period between the War of 1812 and the Civil War. The site remained active into the 20th century, including through World War II.

A guided tour is the way to see parts of the fort that are not visible from the grounds. Tours can take you through underground tunnels and into the interior, including quarters where officers and their families lived. The tunnel system and the elevated bastions help explain how the fort was built and used as a defensive position overlooking the bay.

The fort also has a scenic overlook with broad views across the water and Aquidneck Island. If you prefer to stay outside, walk around the structure and look at its exterior from the park. The grounds themselves are free to explore; access to the fort interior requires a paid tour. Check the Fort Adams Trust website for current tour information before you go.

Walks, beach and open space

The park gives you room to spend time outdoors beyond the historic structure. Its lawns suit a picnic, and the Bay Walk follows the water for views of Newport Harbor and the surrounding coastline. A loop around the park is another option for seeing the fort from outside while taking in the harbor and the Newport Bridge.

There is also a small sandy beach at Brenton Cove, with a roped-off swimming area noted as suitable for children. The shoreline is short, so it works best as a brief swim alongside a visit to the park rather than as a large beach outing. Fishing, boating, walking and field sports are among the activities available in the park. Picnic tables, grills and public restrooms are listed among its facilities.

Festivals and events

Fort Adams is the setting for Newport’s summer Folk Festival and Jazz Festival, as well as other events. Festival days bring a very different feel from a quiet walk around the fort, and the grounds may be busy. Check event schedules before you travel if you want to plan around a performance or avoid festival crowds.

The site also has connections to sailing and local maritime life. Sail Newport is based in the park, and the former Eisenhower House is on the property. Together with the fort, harbor paths and open lawns, these sites make Fort Adams a place to combine a history visit with time beside the water.
