Washington Square was one of five public squares included in William Penn’s plan for Philadelphia. An early version opened in 1815 as Southeast Square; the park took its current name in 1825.

Its history includes both burial and public gathering. Revolutionary War dead and people who died during yellow fever outbreaks were buried here. The square was also known as Congo Square, where Philadelphia’s Black community gathered on holidays to picnic, sing, dance and celebrate their heritage.
