Oʻahu is the third-largest island in the Hawaiian Islands and the most populated, part of the state of Hawaii in the United States. Honolulu, the state capital, sits on its southeastern coast. The island is nicknamed The Gathering Place, and its best-known places include Waikīkī, Pearl Harbor, Diamond Head, Hanauma Bay and the North Shore. It is about 44 miles (71 km) from east to west and about 30 miles (48 km) from north to south.
Waikīkī, the main tourist center on the south coast, has about 90% of the island's hotels and a beach for sun, swimming and surfing. Pearl Harbor, a bay west of Honolulu, is mostly a US naval base, and the USS Arizona wreck there is a war memorial. ʻIolani Palace, built for King Kalākaua, is the only royal palace on American soil. Temperatures stay about 70 to 85°F (21 to 29°C) year-round, and the island is warmest from June through October. Choose your base first, then decide whether you need a rental car to reach the coast.

How many days do you need on Oʻahu?
Four days covers Waikīkī, Diamond Head, Pearl Harbor and a day around the island. A week adds the North Shore and a beach day, and gives room for weather changes.
Do you need a reservation for Diamond Head?
Yes for non-residents. Hawaii State Parks requires entry and parking reservations for non-residents, and the park lists a 6 AM to 6 PM schedule with the last reservation at 4 PM. Book before you fly.
Do you need a car on Oʻahu?
Not in Waikīkī, which is walkable and has buses and rideshare. Rent a car for the Windward coast, the North Shore or Kailua days, and compare parking costs with day-tour prices.
Where should I stay on Oʻahu?
Waikīkī for the first trip, Kailua for calm beaches, the North Shore for surf and a rural feel, or Ko Olina for lagoons. Choose the base that matches your daily plan.
When is the best time to visit Oʻahu?
April, May, September and October bring fewer crowds and calmer seas. Winter has the biggest North Shore surf and whale season, while July and August are busy and hot.
