Cave of the Winds

Cave of the Winds in Niagara Falls State Park takes you down to wooden walkways beside Bridal Veil Falls, ending at the spray-soaked Hurricane Deck.

Cave of the Winds takes you down into the Niagara Gorge on Goat Island, in Niagara Falls State Park, New York. An elevator leads to wooden walkways beside Bridal Veil Falls, where the spray and roar build as you approach the Hurricane Deck, only a few feet from the water. Ponchos and sandals are provided, but expect to get wet. The close-up view is the draw; for a panorama of all three falls, head to the park’s Observation Tower instead.

Down into the Niagara Gorge

The visit begins with an elevator ride about 175 feet down into the Niagara Gorge. At the bottom, wooden walkways lead toward Bridal Veil Falls and the Hurricane Deck. The route brings you close enough to feel the force of the falling water, with the sound and spray increasing as you approach.

The attraction is on Goat Island within Niagara Falls State Park. Its walkways and viewing platforms give you a perspective from the foot of the falls, unlike a view from above the gorge. The experience is open to families, but the wet, exposed route is best suited to people comfortable with powerful water and slippery surfaces.

What the Hurricane Deck is like

The Hurricane Deck is the closest point on the walkways to Bridal Veil Falls. It sits only a few feet from the water, where wind and spray can soak you even with a poncho. The intensity is part of the experience: you hear the falls at close range and see the water rushing down beside the platform.

Ponchos and sandals are provided for the visit. A waterproof phone case or bag helps protect personal items, and water shoes or shoes that dry quickly can make the wet walk easier. Take care on the platforms, which can become slippery.

Why there is no cave today

The name comes from a cave-like rock overhang behind Bridal Veil Falls, where visitors once stood beneath the falls. That formation collapsed in the early 1900s, but the name remained. The present attraction follows walkways at the front of the falls rather than taking visitors behind them.

The wooden platforms are seasonal structures: they are taken down in fall and rebuilt in spring. The Hurricane Deck is also reported to open only during summer, so the route can differ by season. For a broader view of the falls, the park’s Observation Tower looks across all three waterfalls.
