Napa is the county seat of Napa County, in Northern California's North Bay region, north of San Francisco. It is the county's largest city and a principal city of California's Wine Country. Visitors come for its wineries, restaurants and arts scene. The Napa River runs through town toward San Pablo Bay, and its riverfront now has restaurants and hotels. The city had about 76,900 residents as of July 2024.
The rainy season runs from October to April, sometimes into May, and snow is rare. Winters are cool and damp, and nights can drop below freezing. Summers are warm and dry, heat waves can push temperatures above 100°F (37.8°C), and wildfires are a risk, so check conditions before outdoor trips. Autumn is the season many visitors pick. Oakland and San Francisco International airports are about 50 miles (80 km) south, the closest major airports. VINE buses serve the city and county, and Highway CA-29 runs through town.
Napa in five
- Book tastings aheadMany wineries around Napa take tastings by appointment, especially on weekends and in harvest season. Reserve before you arrive, and group tastings into two or three stops a day.
- Do not drive between tastingsWine, winding roads and rideshares that are hard to find in the valley mix badly. Hire a driver, book a tour, or choose one walkable town such as downtown Napa.Napa Valley
- Use Napa as the budget-friendly baseRooms in the city usually cost less than in Yountville, St. Helena or Calistoga, and restaurants are on foot downtown. You add 15 to 40 minutes of driving up the valley.
- Check smoke and fire seasonWildfire smoke can affect air quality and some tastings between late summer and fall. Check conditions and flexible cancellation terms before you book.
- Pair it with San Francisco or MontereyNapa is about an hour from San Francisco without traffic, and fits a California loop that continues to Monterey and Big Sur.San Francisco

Rules for Napa, checked
- Most visitors from visa waiver countries need an ESTA to enter the US. Apply only through the official CBP site at esta.cbp.dhs.gov.Source
- The legal drinking age in California is 21. Tasting rooms and shops may ask for photo ID, so carry your passport or driver's license.
- Do not drink and drive. The adult blood alcohol limit in California is 0.08%, and drivers under 21 face a stricter limit.
- Call 911 for police, fire or ambulance. Check local emergency alerts before outdoor trips, since wildfire and flood risks change with the season.

Is downtown Napa worth visiting?
Yes for restaurants, tasting rooms and a walkable riverfront. It is less scenic than the valley towns, but cheaper and easier, and many visitors use it as a base.
How many days do you need in Napa?
Two days is enough for the city and a valley day. One night works if you only want dinner and a few tastings. Three days lets you add Sonoma or a spa.
Napa or Napa Valley: where should I stay?
Downtown Napa for value and walking. Yountville, St. Helena or Calistoga for vineyard views and a quieter, pricier stay. All are within about 45 minutes of each other.
Do you need a car in Napa?
Not for downtown, but you will want a driver or a tour for wineries. A rental car works if one person stays sober or you stick to one or two tastings.
What is the best time to visit Napa?
April to May for green hills, and September to October for harvest, though fall is busy and smoke can occur. Winter is quiet, and summer is hot and dry.
