At 2300 Silver Lake Blvd, the VDL House was Richard Neutra’s home and studio. He designed it as an experimental house and built it with a no-interest loan from Dutch philanthropist Dr. C.H. Van Der Leeuw. Neutra named it the VDL Research House in honour of his financier.

The property is also known as the Neutra Research House and the Van der Leeuw House. The name Neutra VDL Studio and Residences reflects its use as both a home and a place to work.

Details to look for inside

The house’s character comes through in its practical details as well as its larger spaces. Look for handwritten labels on switches, a vintage stove with dial controls, a built-in blender and a bookshelf system. A mirrored bedroom door opens toward a patio, set against glass.

Upstairs, a meditation space has privacy screens. Pools around the house create reflections and distinct views of the water. Together, these details make the visit a close look at how Neutra used light, water and space.
