Lake Tahoe is a large, deep alpine lake high in the Sierra Nevada, on the border between California and Nevada. Its water is very clear, and mountains rise steeply from the shore on most sides. People come for two seasons. In winter, ski resorts around the basin draw skiers and snowboarders to the snow. In summer, visitors swim, go out on boats and walk the trails along the shore.
The shore you pick shapes the trip. South Lake Tahoe is the largest town on the south shore. Tahoe City sits on the northwest shore, near the point where the Truckee River leaves the lake. Incline Village is on the north shore. Mountain roads can close in winter or require tire chains, so check conditions before you drive. Choose your shore and season first, then book lodging.
