Mahaulepu Beach

Visit Mahaulepu Beach on Kauaʻi’s south coast for tide pools, rugged shoreline and surf views, with Makauwahi Cave nearby.

Mahaulepu Beach is a rugged stretch of Kauaʻi’s south coast, reached by a bumpy drive and a short walk through trees. The shoreline has sandy and rocky sections, tide pools and views of powerful surf, with several beaches to explore along the coast. It’s a good stop for a quiet shoreline walk or to watch the waves, but conditions can make swimming and snorkeling unsuitable. Nearby, Makauwahi Limestone Cave and Lida’s Tortoise Sanctuary add more places to visit.

The access route is part of the outing. Head past the Hyatt and use Ainako Street rather than following map directions that may lead to a road marked for private access. The paved road gives way to rougher gravel, so take it slowly. The final approach includes a short walk through trees to the coast.

Mahaulepu Beach is also reached by the Mahaulepu Heritage Coastal Trail, which begins at Shipwreck Beach and ends here. You can walk the trail in either direction. Views of the coast appear along the route, and the walk passes geological and cultural sites.

The shoreline includes several beach areas, with sand and rocks underfoot and tide pools along the coast. Some stretches suit a quiet pause by the water; others are more rugged. Waves can be powerful, so this is not a dependable place for swimming or snorkeling. Conditions are not always the same: when stream water affects swimming safety, signs may be posted. Check them before entering the water.

Makauwahi Limestone Cave and Lida’s Tortoise Sanctuary are nearby, making them possible additions to a beach visit. The cave is noted for its fossils, and the coast can be explored as part of a longer walk rather than only as a drive-to beach stop.
