Hoboken is a small city in Hudson County, New Jersey, on the Hudson River directly across from Midtown Manhattan. It is best known for its waterfront, where the Hudson River Waterfront Walkway runs past piers and parks with views of the Manhattan skyline, and as the birthplace of Frank Sinatra. Its brownstone streets and the shops and restaurants along Washington Street give it a different feel from the city across the water. The city is also the site of an 1846 game played under the Cartwright rules, often called the first organized baseball game.
Hoboken suits a day trip for the waterfront and Washington Street, or a weekend for slower walks and meals. PATH and NJ Transit trains link the city to Manhattan, so you can stay across the river and still reach Midtown by train. Spring and fall are the most comfortable seasons to walk the waterfront. Plan at least one full day to see both the riverfront and the streets behind it.

PATH trains from Manhattan stop at Hoboken Terminal, the fastest route and only a few minutes across the Hudson. NY Waterway ferries also run from Midtown and Lower Manhattan, slower but with skyline views.
Is Hoboken worth visiting?
Yes, if you want a quieter base across the river from Manhattan, with waterfront walks and restaurants on Washington Street. It also works as a night base for a trip into Manhattan.
How many days do you need in Hoboken?
One day covers the waterfront, Washington Street and Frank Sinatra Park. Add a second day if you want Hoboken as a base for Manhattan or Newark.
Do you need a car in Hoboken?
No, for Hoboken itself. Walking and PATH cover the town, and street parking is metered and restricted. A car helps only for trips further into New Jersey.

Washington Street and the waterfront are the busiest areas in the evening. As in any city, keep valuables out of sight and avoid quiet streets late at night.
When is the best time to visit Hoboken?
April to May and September to October bring mild weather and good waterfront walks. July and August are hot and humid, and winter is cold and gray.
