Harpers Ferry

A small historic town where the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers meet, known for Civil War and John Brown history and easy walks above the water.

Harpers Ferry is a small historic town in the northeast corner of West Virginia, where the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers meet. The town sits where West Virginia, Virginia and Maryland come together, and most of its old core is part of Harpers Ferry National Historical Park. The town's story runs through the federal armory that made firearms from the early 1800s until the Civil War, and through John Brown's raid on the armory in October 1859.

Visitors come for the 19th-century streets, the park's museum and buildings, and short walks to overlooks above the rivers. The Appalachian Trail also runs through town. Harpers Ferry is about 1 to 1.5 hours from Washington, D.C. by train or car, so it works for a day trip or a night or two. Spring and fall are the most comfortable seasons for walking the hills and streets. Plan at least half a day for the main sites, and a full day if you plan to hike.
