Moran Point

Visit Moran Point on the Grand Canyon South Rim for layered canyon views, Red Canyon and a chance to spot the Sinking Ship formation.

Moran Point is a South Rim overlook on Desert View Drive in Grand Canyon National Park. Its broad view takes in the canyon’s layered walls, Red Canyon and, from some angles, the Colorado River far below. Look for the rock formation known as the Sinking Ship, especially as the low sun brings out the shapes and colors. Named for landscape painter Thomas Moran, the viewpoint is a short walk from the parking area and can feel quieter than overlooks closer to the main visitor center.

Moran Point

Moran Point sits along Desert View Drive on the eastern side of the Grand Canyon’s South Rim. Its name honors landscape painter Thomas Moran, who visited the canyon in 1873 with the expedition led by John Wesley Powell. Moran’s paintings helped draw public attention to the canyon and its landscape.

The overlook gives you a wide view across the canyon, including Red Canyon and the Colorado River far below. The river’s visibility depends on the angle from the viewpoint and the formations in front of you. Look for the Sinking Ship, a rock formation whose outline can resemble a vessel against the canyon.

Reading the canyon walls

Moran Point

Moran Point is a useful place to look closely at the canyon’s geology. From here, three broad groups of rock are visible: older metamorphic basement rocks, the Precambrian Grand Canyon Supergroup and younger Paleozoic layers. The Vishnu Schist and pink Zoroaster granite are among the formations identified in the canyon’s deep layers.

The bands of rock become especially clear where changing light creates shadows along the walls. Red Canyon adds a warmer color to the view, while darker formations provide contrast. Take time to look across the scene rather than focusing only on the river or the nearest outcrops.

Planning a stop

The parking area is close to the viewpoint, and the walk to the rim is short. Moran Point is on Desert View Drive, which is accessible to private vehicles; it is not served by the shuttle. You can also take short walks nearby for different views of the canyon.

Sunrise and sunset are good times to see the light shift across the rock layers. After sunset, the area is also used for stargazing. Keep a careful distance from the edge, and watch your footing if you leave the paved walkway to explore the rocks.
