Galena is a small city in Jo Daviess County, in the northwest corner of Illinois, near the Mississippi River and the Wisconsin and Iowa borders. Lead mining in the 1820s and 1830s built the town, and the Galena River gave ore and goods a route toward the Mississippi. The brick and stone buildings from that period still line Main Street and climb the hillsides above it.

The best-known local link is Ulysses S. Grant. He worked in his family's leather goods store here and lived in Galena when the Civil War began. After the war, residents gave him a house, and it is now a state historic site you can tour. The town suits a slow weekend: walking the historic district, shopping and eating along Main Street, and driving the river valleys around it. Autumn brings the best color to the hills around town, and summer suits outdoor time. Two days covers the town itself; add a day if you want the countryside.
