Fargo is a city of about 125,000 people in the Red River Valley of eastern North Dakota, across the river from Moorhead, Minnesota. Together the two cities form one metro area and are the region's main centers for education, health care, and agriculture. The name is famous from the 1996 Coen brothers film, which was shot mostly in Minnesota. The city itself is a college and river town.

Downtown, the Red River paths, local museums and theatres, and small prairie towns within a drive make up the core of a visit. The land is flat, so walking and cycling are easy in good weather, but a car makes outlying sights simpler to reach. Late spring through early fall is the most comfortable time to visit. Winters are long and very cold with heavy snow, so pack warm clothing if you travel from November to March.

Fargo in five

  1. Rent a car for the outskirtsFargo's bus service is limited, and Bonanzaville, the pioneer village museum, is in West Fargo, a drive from downtown. A car makes both trips simple.Getting around
  2. Pack a winter coat, hat and glovesWinter brings snow and wind across the open plains, and even short walks in town need warm layers.Clothing
  3. Check road reports before winter drivesHighways around Fargo can close during snowstorms. Check North Dakota 511 for road conditions before you set out.
  4. Book rooms early on NDSU game weekendsNorth Dakota State University is in Fargo, and home sports weekends fill hotels across town. Check the university's event calendar before you book.
  5. Set the movie aside as your guideThe 1996 film Fargo takes its name from the city but was shot mostly in Minnesota, so its locations are not in Fargo. Plan around the city's own theatre and museums.

    Fargo FAQ

    Is Fargo worth visiting?

Yes, for a short stop with a walkable downtown, a historic theatre and a university town. It is small, so one or two days covers the main sights. Go for the city and the prairie, since most of the film was shot in Minnesota.

How do you get to Fargo?

Fly into Hector International Airport, the city's main airport, or drive in on Interstate 94. A car is the easiest way to move around once you arrive.

Is Fargo the city from the movie?

The film took its name from the city, but it was shot mostly in Minnesota, so its locations are not a Fargo sightseeing route.

How many days do you need in Fargo?

One to two days. Give one day to downtown, the Plains Art Museum and the Red River, and a second day to Bonanzaville or a game if one is on.

When is the best time to visit Fargo?

June to September for mild days and outdoor walks. Winter is cold and windy with short days, so pack for it if you come then.

    Does Fargo have public transit?

Yes, but service is limited and spread thin across the city. Renting a car is the easiest option for trips to West Fargo and the outskirts.
