Birmingham is the largest city in Alabama, in the southeastern United States. It is best known for the civil rights protests of the 1960s and the response to them, which drew national attention. Most trips start downtown at the 16th Street Baptist Church and the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, then continue to Kelly Ingram Park, which is free to enter.

Red Mountain is the other main draw. Vulcan Park and Museum sits on its slopes, and its cast-iron statue of Vulcan, the Roman god of fire and metalworking, overlooks the city. Southern cooking is the third reason to come, from barbecue to meat-and-three lunch counters. Plan two to three days for the civil rights sites and Vulcan Park, and note that the city also fits well as a stop between Atlanta and Nashville. Spring and fall are the most comfortable seasons, since summers are hot and humid.
